A high-profile project demonstrating innovative water and energy saving initiatives will receive $1.5 million in Rudd Government funding. Parliamentary Secretary for Western and Northern Australia, Gary Gray, on behalf of Minister for Climate Change and Water, Penny Wong and Environment Minister Peter Garrett, today announced the Western Australian towns of Cottesloe, Mosman Park and the Shire of Peppermint Grove would receive joint funding for their Grove Library project. Mr Gray said the Grove Library project was one of a number of high-profile demonstration projects being undertaken with funding from the Rudd Government's Green Precincts Fund. "This is great recognition of efforts made by the communities of Cottesloe, Mosman Park and Peppermint Grove to work together to provide an example of energy and water-saving development," Mr Gray said. Senator Wong said the project would incorporate climate-sensitive design features and technologies in a library, community learning centre and administration offices. "As we continue to focus on tackling climate change, projects like this will become increasingly important to showcase innovative ways of saving water and energy. "Water efficient fixtures and the on-site treatment and reuse of wastewater and stormwater will help save 1.5 megalitres of water a year for the precinct." Minister Garrett said renewable energy generation systems would be installed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "Photovoltaic solar panels, a solar hot water system, and a wind turbine system will be installed to generate an estimated 47,000 kilowatt hours a year," Minister Garrett said. "By incorporating ecologically sustainable design features and technologies such as a thermal maze and an in-ground heat exchange system, the project will reduce carbon emissions by about 167 tonnes a year - the equivalent of taking 47 cars off the road." A series of workshops, events, community forums and school programs will be held to give the community practical first-hand information on innovative design ideas and lifestyle changes they can use in their own lives. The Rudd Government's Green Precincts Fund aims to help to prepare Australia for a future with less water and to encourage local communities to better manage their water and energy use. Further Green Precincts Fund recipients will be announced over the coming weeks.
