Work Progresses on Springvale Road Rail Crossing Upgrade

Work is progressing on the $140 million Springvale Road Rail Crossing Separation Project, with the foundation concrete now being poured for the new Nunawading Station.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, and Member for Deakin, Mike Symon, were onsite today to oversee the concrete pour.

"We are working in partnership with the Brumby Labor Government to deliver this project as quickly as possible, thereby improving safety at one of the busiest and most dangerous road/rail intersections in Victoria," said Mr Albanese.

"Everyday 50,000 vehicles, more than 200 trains and some 5,000 pedestrians share this one intersection.

"As well as delivering long term improvements in the operations of Melbourne's road and public transport networks, this project is providing an immediate boost to the local economy with the creation of more than 100 direct jobs."

The project is being jointly funded by the Rudd ($80 million) and Brumby ($60 million) Labor governments, with construction scheduled for completion in early 2010.

Mr Symon said the project is expected to benefit local businesses through reduced traffic congestion and improved arrangements for pedestrians, car parking and buses.

"This project was a key election commitment in 2007 and the Rudd Labor Government is delivering on it," Mr Symon said.

"Road safety will be greatly improved by this project and facilities for train passengers will also be enhanced with a new railway station to be built on the west side of Springvale Road, replacing the existing Nunawading Station on the east side.

"The new Nunawading Station will be a premium standard, which will include a customer service centre attended by staff from the first train in the morning to the last train at night."

All up, the Rudd Labor Government is investing $7.9 billion to maintain and modernise Victoria's road and rail infrastructure.
