RUDD GOVERNMENT DELIVERS $720,000 TO BOOST LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR QUEANBEYAN AND JERRABOMBERA

The Rudd Labor Government has today announced more than $720,000 for ready-to-go local infrastructure projects for Queanbeyan and Jerrabombera, including upgrades to the Queanbeyan Showgrounds, Riverside Oval and the David Madew Oval.

Minister Albanese said that the funding would be delivered from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program to support jobs and boost local economies.

"This program is the single largest investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history."

The Queanbeyan City Council will receive funding for the following local projects:

  • $170,000 to upgrade the Queanbeyan Showground, including sealing of internal roads and parking areas, replacing the cattle yards and installing new amenities;
  • $290,000 to replace the kiosk, change room and storage room at Riverside Oval;
  • $90,000 to upgrade Queanbeyan Museum;
  • $80,000 to construct a walkway over Glenrock Creek, which will also serve to collect storm debris underneath;
  • $60,000 for the  construction of storage facilities at David Madew Oval;
  • $20,000 to construct a reconciliation area at Queanbeyan Park;
  • $8,500 to upgrade the Queanbeyan and District Basketball stadium; and
  • $2,500 to build a cubby house and activity centre for the Waratah Pre-School.

Mr Albanese said that the Rudd Government was determined to act decisively with local communities to support jobs and improve the quality of local infrastructure.

"Without federal funding these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket."

"More than 3,600 projects have been submitted under the first round of the Community Infrastructure Program."

Dr Kelly today said he was pleased to see funding announced so quickly for the Queanbeyan community.

"This injection of funding will give a significant boost to Queanbeyan's economy and will see a number of important local projects going ahead.

"These projects will benefit every resident of Queanbeyan, through improvements to the Showground, parks, sporting facilities and the Queanbeyan museum.

"The Council will receive a contract shortly. I encourage them to sign and return it as quickly as possible so funds can be released", said Dr Kelly.

QUEANBEYAN CITY COUNCIL PROJECTS

Queanbeyan Showground
Bitumen sealing of internal roads and parking areas at the Queanbeyan Showground. The internal roads and parking areas in the showground are not sealed. They create a dust nuisance in dry windy weather and are unsuitable in the wet. The roads will be prepared for bitumen sealing and then sealed.

Replace the amenities block at Queanbeyan Showground. The present facilities are sub-standard and require replacement.

Replacement of cattle yards at the Queanbeyan Showground. The cattle yards in the Queanbeyan Showground are run-down and dangerous for holding stock. The old yards will be dismantled.

Riverside Oval Amenities Upgrade - Replacement of amenities including kiosk, change rooms and storage room at Riverside Oval, Queanbeyan. The current facilities are sub-standard, and larger facilities will be built.

Queanbeyan Museum Upgrade - This will include construction of a storage facility and landscaping, including pathway construction and water conservation initiatives. The Queanbeyan Museum does not have the space to store its collection of artefacts.  A building will be constructed to provide for more storage. The grounds are run down and not suitable for use by the public. Areas will be landscaped, pathways built and water conservation measures installed.

Glenrock Creek Debris Rack and Walkway - Construction of a debris rack to collect storm debris and walkway over Glenrock Creek in Queanbeyan. During heavy storms debris is washed into Glenrock Creek and then to the Queanbeyan River. The rack will collect debris so this does not happen. The rack will also include a walkway so that walkers can have access over the creek which will extend the public access to the Queanbeyan River foreshore.

David Madew Oval Upgrade - Construction of storage facilities at the David Madew Oval in Jerrabomberra. There is insufficient storage areas to secure equipment in use by sporting clubs.

Queanbeyan and District Basketball Stadium Upgrade - Re-sanding flooring and replacement of doorways at Queanbeyan and District Basketball Stadium.

Waratah Pre-School Cubby House - Provision of a cubby house for the Waratah Pre-School in Queanbeyan. The pre-school is a not-for-profit facility and is short of activities for the children in its care.

Queanbeyan Park reconciliation area - Construction of a reconciliation area including commemorative wall, garden and plaque at Queanbeyan Park. A project nominated by the Ngambri Land Council. Reconciliation Place will commemorate Sorry Day and acknowledge the local indigenous people. It will involve a garden, commemorative wall and plaque.
