RUDD GOVERNMENT DELIVERS $4.8 MILLION TO BUILD COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE IN REGIONAL SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The Rudd Labor Government has today announced $4.8 million to build community infrastructure across regional South Australia - as part of our investment to support local jobs and boost the local economy.

The funding will be delivered from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program - the largest single investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history.

The $4.8 million will provide funding to local councils and shires for 41 infrastructure projects in regional communities from Port Augusta to Kangaroo Island, from Kimba to Mount Gambier, and from Port Lincoln to Bordertown in South Australia.

[Details of projects and locations are below]

Projects being funded include $731,000 for the Whyalla foreshore redevelopment, $635,000 towards the Port Pirie pool upgrade, $535,000 to improve the Port Augusta streetscape, and $313,000 to start the Mount Gambier Library and Community Centre.

Without federal funding, these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket.

The Community Infrastructure Program is aimed at stimulating local economies and helping communities respond to the global financial crisis.

Investing in local projects that are ready to go is a great way to generate construction activity and local jobs.

It will also deliver much-needed infrastructure to improve the quality of life in local communities.

More than 3,600 projects have been submitted under the first round of the Community Infrastructure Program and the Rudd Government is getting on with the job.

These councils will receive a contract shortly. I encourage them to sign and return it as quickly as possible so funds can be released.

More projects will be announced as they are approved over the next few weeks.
