17 February 2009

The Rudd Labor Government has today approved more than $4 million to build and upgrade community infrastructure in Sydney's south-west - as part of our investment to support jobs and boost the local economy.

Minister Albanese was in Campbelltown today with Mr Hayes to announce the funding from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program.

"Local councils will receive this funding for important local projects, such as a new baseball complex at Woodlands Road, a Community Centre and Youth Hub in Tahmoor, seating at the Whitlam Leisure Centre, and upgrading playgrounds across Camden.

"Without federal funding, these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket."

The councils' funding is as follows:

  • Campbelltown $1,517,000
  • Liverpool $1,258,000
  • Camden $606,000
  • Wollondilly $638,000

[The full list of projects to be funded is below]

Mr Albanese said that the Rudd Government was determined to act decisively with local communities to support jobs and improve the quality of local infrastructure.

"We are delivering the $800 million for community infrastructure in two components:

  • $250 million to be shared between all councils and shires; and
  • $550 million to be allocated through competitive grants.

"Today's funding is part of the $250 million component, under which local governments have already submitted more than 3,600 projects."
