RUDD GOVERNMENT DELIVERS $1 MILLION TO MAKE MACKAY PLAYGROUNDS SUN SAFE

The Rudd Labor Government has today announced more than $1 million to upgrade and install shade structures in playgrounds in and around Mackay - as part of our investment to support jobs and build infrastructure in the region.

Minister Albanese was in Mackay today with Mr Bidgood and Mayor Col Meng to announce the funding from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program.

"Mackay Regional Council will receive $1,014,000 in funding to build shade structures at 29 playgrounds in Mackay, Sarina and Mirani". [The full list of playgrounds is below.]

"Without federal funding, these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket."Mr Bidgood today said that he was delighted to see funding announced so quickly for the local community.

"I have made many representations in Canberra about the importance of local projects like this for our community.

"Mackay is feeling the effects of the global financial crisis and this investment in local infrastructure could not come at a better time.

"Investing in local projects is a great way to generate construction activity and provide much-needed infrastructure to local communities."

Mr Albanese said that the Rudd Government was determined to act decisively with local communities to support jobs and improve the quality of local infrastructure.

"We are delivering the $800 million for community infrastructure in two components:

  • $250 million to be shared between all councils and shires; and
  • $550 million to be allocated through competitive grants.

"Today's funding is part of the $250 million component, under which local governments have submitted more than 3,600 projects. And the Rudd Government has already begun rolling out projects in local communities."

Mr Bidgood concluded, "The Council will receive a contract shortly. I encourage them to sign and return it as quickly as possible so funds can be released."
