The Rudd Government has today announced $899,000 for ready-to-go local infrastructure projects across the Cairns region, including playgrounds, community halls, and swimming pools. Minister Albanese was in Cairns with Mr Turnour to announce the funding from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program to support jobs and boost the local economy by building and renewing community infrastructure. The Cairns Regional Council will receive this funding to deliver important local projects for the community. They include: - $135,000 to upgrade the footpath and streetscape in the Cairns CBD;
- $100,000 to refurbish Muddy's Playground and upgrade park benches and bins on the Esplanade walkway;
- $191,510 to upgrade sports facilities across the region;
- $272,490 to refurbish community halls across the region; and
- $200,000 to upgrade the Mossman, Tobruk and Woree swimming pools.
[Details of community halls and sports facilities are below] Mr Turnour today said that he was delighted to see funding announced so quickly for the local community. "The Rudd Government understands that our community in Cairns is feeling the effects of the global financial crisis. I have made many representations in Canberra about the importance of local projects like this in generating construction activity and provide much-needed infrastructure to local communities." Mr Albanese said that the Rudd Government was determined to act decisively with local communities to support jobs and improve the quality of local infrastructure. "Without federal funding, these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket. "Councils around Australia have submitted more than 3,600 community infrastructure projects. And the Rudd Government has already begun rolling out projects in local communities." Mr Turnour concluded, "The Council will receive a contract shortly. I encourage them to sign and return it as quickly as possible so funds can be released."
