The installation of boom gates and other safety measures at priority level rail crossings in South Australia has begun with funding coming from the Rudd Labor Government's Economic Stimulus Plan. Never before has the Federal Government had a program dedicated to improving safety and preventing accidents at level crossings. This investment will not only improve road safety but also support local jobs and local businesses during the current global recession. Work has now started at the following locations in the north of Adelaide: - Penfield Road - Virginia - Upgrade from Stop signs to lights and boom gate plus new road work.
- Hayman Road - Two Wells - Upgrade from Stop signs to lights and boom gate plus new road work.
All up, the Rudd Labor Government is investing $13.6 million from our Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program to upgrade safety around South Australia's 34 high risk level crossings in South Australia. The projects are being delivered by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). While South Australia did not suffer fatalities or serious accidents at level crossings last year, there is no room for complacency. That's why we are commencing this work on safety measures at the State's level crossings. Nationally, our $150 million Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program will fund the installation of boom gates and other safety measures at 292 level crossings.
