$2 Million To Help Build Waverley Park Pavilion

Minister Anthony Albanese today announced that the Rudd Labor Government would offer up to $2 million towards the $7.3 million new Waverley Park pavilion and indoor sports building in Sydney's east.

Mr Albanese made the announcement today at Waverley Park with Mayor Sally Betts.

The funding for this project, which will be managed by the Waverley Council, is from the Government's $800 million Community Infrastructure Program the largest one-off investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history.

We are investing in major community infrastructure to support jobs and stimulate local economies during the global economic recession.

Not only is this project expected to generate local construction activity but it will also deliver lasting benefits for the community.

Waverley Park is in urgent need of an overhaul, with the existing pavilion found to be structurally unsafe and posing a significant safety risk.

This project will design and construct a new pavilion and multipurpose facility for the local community. It will include:

• seating for up to 250 spectators;
• multi-purpose indoor sports court;
• club rooms for the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club;
• shared club space for local rugby league and union teams;
• community function room with kitchen areas;
• change rooms and accessible public amenities;
• referees room;
• sports equipment storage area; and
• energy efficient and water saving measures throughout the building.

This funding builds on $340,000 already delivered to Waverley Council for upgrades to a range of local parks and playgrounds.

The Rudd Labor Government is working in partnership with local government to fund more than 3,000 community projects across Australia that will support jobs, stimulate local economies and deliver long-term improvements in communities.
