The Rudd Labor Government has today announced the winners and those receiving commendations across 10 categories in the 2008 National Awards for Local Government. (The winners are listed below) The next and final stage of the 2008 awards process will be selecting council winners for the overall National Awards, which will be determined by a National Judging Panel later this month. The Government congratulates this year's category winners and those receiving commendations on their success and on the quality of the projects entered. Councils from every mainland state and territory in Australia are represented amongst this year's category and commendation winners. We also thank the 71 councils which took part in this year's Awards, submitting 114 entries from across Australia. All councils entering were also asked to provide an assurance that they had not engaged in any conduct likely to bring the councils or the Awards into disrepute. This year marks the 22nd successful year of the National Awards. The ongoing theme of the Awards is "Local Government - working hard for Australians" and it showcases the resourcefulness and innovation of Australia's hard working councils in improving services to their communities. The National Awards have highlighted the wide range of issues facing local government, and I encourage them to continue sharing information to improve their capacity and find solutions for their communities. An independent panel judged the Awards and determined 13 winners for the 10 categories of Awards - 4 from small councils with an under-15,000 ratepayer base. There were also 15 commendations. A list of category and commendation winners is attached. The National Winners will be determined by a Panel chaired by the former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Jim Soorley, and announced towards the end of the year. Information about the National Awards for Local Government and the complete list of category and commendations winners can be found at www.infrastructure.gov.au/local/awards.
