APPOINTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE COORDINATOR Today I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Michael Deegan as the inaugural Infrastructure Coordinator. The Infrastructure Coordinator is charged with overseeing the day-to-day operations of Infrastructure Australia and working closely with the twelve highly distinguished Australians serving as its inaugural members. Mr Deegan will bring to the job a wealth of experience across infrastructure sectors and has worked in both the public and private domain. Mr Deegan is not unaccustomed to challenging tasks having been a Director General of the NSW Department of Transport; Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Administrative Services; Secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet; director of various construction and investment companies; and President of the Property Council of Australia. When commencing as Chair of the National Transport Commission in 2006, Mr Deegan took over an organisation that had lost its focus. He has since built it to its current level, heavily relied on by both government and industry for providing a strategic overview of transport. Mr Deegan will make an outstanding contribution to the Government's nation building agenda and I thank him for accepting this important position. He will take up the position on 1 July this year. Mr Deegan will be responsible for managing a small team of professionals to ensure that Infrastructure Australia is provided with the highest standard of support and advice on a wide range of policy and regulatory issues. With all key personnel now in place and the Budget having allocated $20 billion to the Building Australia Fund, the Rudd Labor Government has taken just six months to bring national leadership and new thinking to the planning, financing and building of infrastructure.
